Incorrect details
[edit]Some of the facts given in the flags of the world article are woefully wrong. I deleted the entire article and am now rebuilding it. Please be patient--snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 23:53, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Flag myths
[edit]There is a new article at Lion myth of Sri Lanka that a copy of this article plus some new information about "myths" (I didn't really read it). If that information is valid, it should be moved into this article. howcheng {chat} 19:19, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Howcheng, the new article appears to be a blatant POV fork. All the additional material, which is not cited, POV and entirely OR used to be in this article, before I deleted it in January in this edit and later reverted its re addition, both times by Veri (talk · contribs).
- The basic backgroud behind the issue is the Lion is almost universally accepted as the symbol used by ancient Sri Lankan rulers, and hence the same symbol has been brought forward with the current national flag. Whoever is adding this stuff (it looks to me to be the same editor using multiple accounts) is trying to portray it as otherwise and say that the claim that ancient Sri Lankan kings used a lion flag is a myth. Hence the "Lion myth of Sri Lanka".
- Since non of his claims are backed up by any reliable sources, I'll be inclined to put it up at AFD. Any suggestions on that? --snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 03:32, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
I always think this flag from Sri Lanka is beautiful, but some guy from a New Zealand unversity: http://www.otago.ac.nz/philosophy/Staff/JoshParsons/flags/alpha.html thinks that flag is one the worsts in the actual world. --201.19.229.152 (talk) 22:17, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
- Pathetic analysis of flags, that one. This flag underwent minor changes in the 70s. "They might have thought it was hip in the 70s" clearly shows that he has no idea that this flag is more than 2000 years old. --Rangitha Kuruppu (talk) 18:12, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
In my country, there is a mtyth that sri lanka's national animal is the lion. is this true? Are there even lions in sri lanka or is it just a symbol? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.149.7.72 (talk) 16:21, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Contradicting Information
[edit]I would like to point out a contradiction according to the Sri Lankan government's web portal "The maroon colored portion of the flag manifests the other minor religions", but the in the article it is said "the crimson background represents European Burghers and is also a reference to the rich colonial background of the country" which to the best of my knowledge is false.Hesharawa (talk) 04:08, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- Since the article pointed out by this comment is dead, here is another governmental entity that asserts the same thing that is mentioned above: Sri Lankan Department of Labour - National symbols of Sri Lanka Kulendra (talk) 05:26, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
The History and Myths of Sri Lankan Lion Flag
[edit]A few examples of European Heraldic Lions and the Sri Lankan national flag. see it [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.78.20.191 (talk) 18:04, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
//When Vijaya, the first King of the southern parts of island of Sri Lanka, arrived in Sri Lanka from India in 486 BC, he brought with him a flag with a symbol of a lion on it.// It is story of Mahavansa book. rather then a historical record. Even though there is nothing about "vijaya brought with him a flag with a symbol of a lion". So it is original research. Merger proposal
[edit]I propose to merge Flag of Sri Lanka into Bar. I think that the content in the Flag_of_Sri_Lanka article is more complete and more accurate. Plus it's more logical to have one article instead of two. Steve92341 (talk) 16:38, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
